Moving house with pets, without the drama

Moving house with pets, without the drama

We have moved twice with pets, and the second time went nothing like the first, because the first time we did everything wrong. Boxes appeared suddenly, strangers carried furniture through the house all day, the cat vanished, and the dog lost his mind at every trip to the truck.

From the pet's point of view, we had demolished our shared world in a single day.

The week before

Cats read the house as territory, so let them read the packing. Boxes can stay out for a couple of weeks. Cats supervise, climb in, mark them with cheek rubs. By moving day the boxes are furniture, not invaders.

Keep routines identical while the boxes multiply. Same feeding times, same walk times. The routine is the signal that the world still works.

For the day itself, board the pets or give them one closed room with their bed, water, litter, and a note on the door. A pet underfoot among strangers with heavy furniture is how doors get left open. Lost-pet reports spike on moving days for exactly this reason.

Arrival, in the right order

Set up one room completely first. Bed, bowls, litter, familiar smells, then bring the pet in and let it own that room while the rest of the house fills up. Cats especially need a base camp; let them expand territory at their own pace, over days, not hours.

Dogs do better with a long walk before the first session of unpacking, and their bed placed in a spot that mirrors the old house, if you can manage it. Feed on the old schedule from day one. New address, same laws of physics.

The settling window

Expect two or three weird weeks. Cats may sleep more and eat less for a few days; that is normal. What is not normal is a cat not eating for over two days or a dog that cannot settle after a week, and that is vet territory.

Update the microchip registration the same week. It takes five minutes and it is the whole point of having a microchip.

The second move, done this way, was almost boring. The cat claimed the new windowsill by evening. The dog had a nap mid-afternoon like it was any Tuesday. Pets do not need the move to be painless. They need it to be legible.

How do I move house with a cat or dog?

Keep routines identical while packing, give pets one closed safe room on moving day, set up their bed and belongings first at the new home, and update the microchip.

How long does it take a pet to settle after moving?

Expect a few weird weeks. Cats may eat less for a few days (vet if over two days); most dogs and cats adjust within two to three weeks with a stable routine.
